Dec. 21, 2007
CANYON, Texas - The postseason accolades continue to roll in for the Buff and Lady Buff soccer teams after both squads captured conference championships this fall. This weekend, both teams were well represented on the 2007 NSCAA/adidas All-Midwest Region team with three women and four men being named to their respective squads. On the women's side, junior Elisabeth Markussen was named a first team forward after a solid campaign in which she led the team with 14 goals and 32 points. Representing WT on the second team were defender Kayla Sisco and midfielder Adi Stein. Markussen scored 14 goals, including four game-winners, during regular season play as West Texas A&M finished the regular season with an overall record of 11-6 and a 5-5 Lone Star Conference mark. Her goal tally ties her for fifth in WT's record books for goals in a season and moving her up to second in goals in a career, with 30. She also added three assists, to tie her point total from last year (31), which puts her sixth in points in a season. Her 31 points pushes her career point total to 70, putting her in third place in points in a career, just two points behind the second place spot. Stein was one of the most productive playmakers this year, tying for second on the team with six assists. With her seven assists as a freshman, Stein moves up to eighth in WT's record books for assists in a career (13). She also added two goals this season for a total of 10 points. For the Buffs, senior defender Kenneth Christensen, junior midfielder Tommy Nutter and forward Ben Everson were named to the first team, while Jacob Jensen earned second team accolades. Christensen anchored the defense for WT, helping the team finish the season with an overall record of 17-3 and a share of the Southwest Soccer Conference regular season title. The Hedensted, Denmark, native helped the Buffs record a 0.83 goals against average by allowing adversaries to score just 17 goals, a total that includes holding all but two opponents to one goal or less. From his midfield position, Nutter ranked among the team leaders in assists with five, while Jensen led the team with nine assists and ranked second with 23 points. Everson made the most of his first season in Canyon, emerging as one of the country's leading goal scorers, recording 14 on the season to go along with his team leading point total of 31. Additionally, the season's final edition of the NSCAA/adidas Top 25 was released last week and the Buffs appeared in the No. 14 position. |
