Buffs Finish Fore-th In WTAMU/Subway Invite Tuesday



Junior Paul Slaughter was tied for 17th to finish as the Buffs' top golfer, as they finished fourth in the WTAMU/Subway Invitational at La Paloma Golf Course at Amarillo.

Abilene Christian University fired a combined 10-over 294 Tuesday to overtake St. Mary's University and win the West Texas A&M University Subway Invitational at La Paloma Country Club at Amarillo, Texas. ACU overcame Tuesday's windy conditions to top STMU by two strokes, finishing with an 866 to 868 for St. Mary's. Host WTAMU was fourth in the 11-team field.

Cameron University was third (884), followed by host WTAMU (907) and East Central University (911) rounded out the top five. Western New Mexico University was sixth (912), followed by Southwestern Oklahoma State University (920), Western New Mexico JV (921), Southeastern Oklahoma State University (926), College of the Southwest (928) and Texas A&M University-Commerce (942).

Jamie Amoretti of St. Mary's captured individual medalist honors with a 3-under 210. ACU's Cian Daly was second with a 1-over 214, one stroke ahead of a three-way tie for third. Greg McAuley of St. Mary's, Cameron's Owen Mahaffey and ACU's Curtis Harris all carded 215's. Those five received All-Tournament awards.

Western New Mexico's Greg Pool fired the low round of the day with a 1-under 70, finishing sixth with a 4-over 213. Christopher Gold, an individual from Texas Tech University, was seventh with a 5-over 218, followed by East Central's Andrew Bishop in eighth with a 6-over 219. Cameron's Travis Lovins was ninth after carding a 7-over 220 and Nick Williams, another individual from Texas Tech, completed the Top 10 with an 8-over 221.

Host WTAMU was led by junior Paul Slaughter, who was tied for 17th with a 225, one stroke ahead of sophomore Jon Musser, who was tied for 20th with a 226.

Junior Spud Dillingham was tied for 29th with a 229, while senior Thomas Maldonado was tied for 40th with a 232 and junior Kent Neal carded a 236 to place 40th.

Competing as individuals, freshman Joshua Rangel was tied for 23rd with a 227, two strokes in front of fellow freshman Geoff Phemister's 229, good for 29th-place. Freshman Jonathan Shelley was 62nd with a 261.

This was the final tune-up for most of the team's for their respective conference tournaments. WTAMU, along with Abilene Christian, Cameron, East Central, Southeastern Oklahoma, Southwestern Oklahoma and Texas A&M-Commerce will be playing in the Lone Star Conference Championships, April 17-18 at Trophy Club, Texas.
