Geegan Selected as Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Month for November

Geegan was named All-Horizon League and Third Team Academic All-American this season

Dec. 5, 2007

Tara Geegan, a senior middle blocker on the Wright State volleyball team, has been named the U.S. Army Horizon League Female Scholar-Athlete of the Month for November, announced League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone.

The League's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Month for the second straight month, Geegan (Algonquin, IL/Jacobs) was named a Third-Team Academic All-American and a First Team Academic All-District IV during the month of November by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Geegan, who currently holds a 4.0 grade point average in Early Childhood Education, was chosen Academic All-Horizon League in 2006 and was one of four female recipients of the Dr. Carl Benner Scholar-Athlete Award, which is given annually to the Wright State student-athlete with the top grade point average and is either a junior or senior.

On the court, Geegan was named All-Horizon League this season after finishing fifth in the League in blocks per game and seventh in hitting percentage. She was also selected as the Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week on November 5, having received the honor following a week that saw her hit .370 with 34 kills in three home matches with 15 blocks. She reached double figures in kills during four of the six matches in November and finished the month with 62 kills and 24 blocks in 23 games.

The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards in 2006 as a way to supplement recognition of outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. That commitment continued with the addition of the U.S. Scholar-Athlete of the Month awards this fall. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours, and perform well during the month's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
