Nov. 5, 2007
DAYTON, OH - The Wright State men's soccer team posted their seventh victory of the season on Monday evening at Alumni Field, defeating IUPUI 4-1. The Green and Gold used four, unanswered goals in the match to defeat IUPUI and set a new season-high for goals in a game.
IUPUI (5-10-1) got the scoring started in the 19th minute when Eric Weigman netted the unassisted goal, as he dribbled past the WSU keeper and scored in the open net.
WSU would answer with the equalizer just six minutes later when IUPUI gave WSU a free kick just outside the penalty box. Carl Ebers teed up the ball 20 yards away from the net and sent a shot skipping across the turf and past a diving IUPUI goalkeeper for his first collegiate marker.
The two teams entered halftime tied at one goal apiece, with WSU holding a slight edge in shots at six-to-two.
In the second half, WSU took the lead on a Brian Cothern marker in the 73rd minute. The goal was set up when Kwaku Gyimah sent a pass through the IUPUI defense and Cothern connected on a shot into the upper corner of the net for his second goal of the season.
Just seventeen seconds later, the Raiders scored their third goal of evening. Braden Fleak broke free from the defense and Josh Grossman's pass found his foot as he chipped the ball over an IUPUI defender for his third goal of the season.
Grossman then got into the scoring column when he netted his own goal at the 80:42 mark with a blast from the top of the 18-yard box. It was the first goal of the season for Grossman and gave him three total points for the match.
Tebias Mason played all 90-minutes in goal for WSU, allowing one goal, while making three saves. WSU out-shot the Jaguars 15-4, took five corner kicks to IUPUI's two and held a seven-to-four advantage in shots on-goal.
The Raiders wrap up their regular season with a 7-12 mark overall and head into the opening round of the Horizon League Tournament on Friday, November 9. The Raiders will host Valparaiso that day, game time is to be announced.
