College Career
Brigham Young's Danny Ainge led his team to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Basketball Tournament. En-route to a great season finish, BYU defeated Princeton, 61-51, stunned UCLA by blitzing the favored Bruins 78 to 55 and knocked out Notre Dame in the waning moments of their game, 51-50. Ainge was outstanding in all three games. Against Notre Dame, he made the game-winning play with 8 seconds left. Ainge drove through three Notre Dame players at mid-court, slipped past two defenders at the basket and made a lay-up as the buzzer sounded. It was a great memory that will remain with those who watched. His historic last-second layup that upset Notre Dame in the third round of the 1981 NCAA tournament is one of the most famous shots in tournament history. Two-time Academic All-American at BYU; ranked second on Western Athletic Conference career scoring list. Won John Wooden Award as college basketball's Player of the Year in 1981.
