Two weeks since competing against some of the top teams in the nation, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's and women's cross country teams return to action this weekend when they host the Horizon League Championships on Saturday, Oct. 30. The meet will be run at the Parkside National Cross Country Course in Kenosha, Wis., with the women's race set for 11 a.m. and the men to follow at noon. Last Time Out: Pre-National Invitational Women: Senior Anna Christian finished second to lead the UWM women to a second-place finish in the open race at the Pre-National Invitational, Saturday afternoon in Terre Haute. Also scoring a top-20 finish was freshman Holly Nearmann, who took 14th place. Men: Competing against some of the toughest competition in the nation, the Panther men ran to a 32nd-place finish in the 35-team "white" race on Saturday in Terre Haute. Junior Josh Nygren was the top Black & Gold finisher, taking 90th. The same Indiana State Cross Country Course plays home to both the NCAA Regionals and NCAA Championships in November. Last Year's Horizon League Championships On the men's side, Josh Nygren led four Panther scorers among the top-30 with a 14th-place finish as UWM took fourth place at last year's league meet with 112 points, just six points out of third place. Butler won its sixth-straight Horizon crown with just 18 points, sweeping the top four positions. Anna Christian led the women with a sixth-place finish, while two more UWM runners were among the top-20, as Milwaukee claimed third place at the league meet. The Panthers trailed just Butler (46 points) and Loyola (50) in the team standings with 83 team points, tying Youngstown State. Christian earned first-team all-league honors, while Nygren was named to the second-team. Panthers At The League Meet: A History Lesson While neither the men or women from Milwaukee have ever won the Horizon League Championship, the Panther men garnered individual championships in 1995 and 1996, while taking second as a team each year. Incidentally, 1995 was the only time UWM has hosted the meet. The men have been a model of consistency, taking fourth the last five years, while their top finishes have been the two second-place finishes in `95 and `96. The women made strides last year with a third-place finish, improving over sixth-place showings the two years prior. It was the third, third-place finish for the team. Up Next After competing in the Horizon League Championships, the Panthers will have two weeks off before making a bid to qualify for the NCAA Championships. The NCAA Regionals are Nov. 13 in Terre Haute, Ind., on the same course that UWM ran at the Pre-Nationals, Oct. 16.
