Peters, Lange, Hegemann All Honored By Horizon LeagueNov. 16, 2005 MILWAUKEE - University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee freshman Becky Peters was named the Horizon League Co-Newcomer of the year while senior Melissa Lange and junior Cheryl Hegemann have been named to the All-Horizon League team. The full post-season awards list was announced this morning by the league office. Peters set a school record with 506 digs during the regular season while starting at libero in all 28 matches this year. She reached double figures in digs in every match this season, including a school record 41-dig outing against George Washington in September. She was named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week three times and recorded 20 or more digs in 10 matches this season. Peters shared her award with Jenni Ramminger of Cleveland State. Lange, who was honored by the league for the second-straight year, has been UWM's lone setter in league play as the Panthers shifted from a 6-2 formation to a 5-1. The Panthers won 12-straight league matches after the lineup shift, and Lange has passed 1,000 assists on the season. She has 10 double-doubles this year and has tallied more than 50 assists in a pair of three-game matches, collecting 57 against Cleveland State and 53 against Wright State. Hegemann is UWM's team leader in kills while ranking second on the team in blocks and third in kills. She has 11 double-doubles this season, including three in league play, and she was named to the all-tournament team at the Holiday Inn-Hawkeye Challenge. Her best performance of the season same against Youngstown State, when she tallied 28 kills and 16 digs while hitting .436. Regular-season second-place finisher Cleveland State claimed two of the league's other major awards, as Chuck Voss was named the league's coach of the year and Nickole Kennedy was named the league's player of the year. Megan Knightly of Butler was named the league's defensive player of the year. The Panthers (20-8), who won their third-straight Horizon League regular season title, open league tournament play Saturday in the semifinals against an opponent to be determined.
