Panthers Repeat As Warrior Invite Champs
WAUWATOSA, Wis. (March 31, 2007) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team won 12 events to handily defend its Warrior Invitational title Saturday in nearby Wauwatosa. Milwaukee took first overall and topped Marquette, 107-49, the only other Division I team at the meet. Junior Amber Curtis and freshmen Kelsey Conrad and Reigna Pierce each won two events. Curtis was victorious in the shot put with the third-best throw in school history (44-1 1/2) and tossed 139-10 in the hammer. Conrad paced the field in both the 100m and 200m, running a time of 12.46 in the 100 and crossing the line in 26.01 for top honors in the 200m. Pierce swept the horizontal jumps, edging sophomore teammate Beth Zimmerman in the long jump and tying Zimmerman in the triple jump. In the long jump, Pierce leapt 17-9 3/4 to Zimmerman's 17-9 1/2, while both athletes jumped 36-6 3/4 in the triple jump. Sophomores Shannon Buttchen and Holly Nearman and freshmen Laura Ring and Ashley Zander also added wins for the Panthers. Buttchen completed the 800m in 2:22.97 for first place and Ring, normally an 800 runner, won the 400m in 1:00.17. Nearman was first in the 1500m with a time of 4:52.96 and Zander threw 110-3 in the discus to take top honors. UWM also claimed wins in both relays with a time in of 48.32 in the 4x100m and 4:15.37 in the 4x400m.
