Tennis Set For Winter BreakOct. 22, 2001 MILWAUKEE - The UWM tennis team fell in a pair of dual matches over the weekend, ending the fall portion of their season on a down note. The Panthers lost to Western Illinois Friday and Wright State Saturday, dropping the overall record to 0-3 on the short season. Fresh Faces: The Panthers have gotten strong play from the first recruiting class head coach Erin Grambow has brought to UWM. Three of the four freshmen on the roster currently have the top records on the team at the conclusion of fall play. Erin Felber (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) ended the fall season with a 2-2 record. Felber lost to Kyana Jackson of Wright State in No. 5 singles in her only match this weekend. Megan Brown (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) dropped two matches this weekend at No. 4 singles, dropping her record to 4-5 overall. Brown currently has the most wins on the Panther roster. Tammie Spiel (Milwaukee, Wis./Muskego) holds a 1-7 record as fall play ends. Spiel has played most of her matches at No. 1 singles and has held her own against more experienced players. The fourth member of Grambow's recruiting class, Melissa Hackett (Greendale, Wis./Greendale), has not played a singles match this fall. Hackett is 0-2 in teaming up with senior Julie Heling (Menasha, Wis./St. Mary Central) in doubles play. Senior Farewell: This weekend's matches marked the end of senior Kate Laveck's (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) career as a Panther. Laveck has used up all her eligibility and will not be able to compete for UWM in the spring. Laveck's departure leaves a rather large hole for the Panthers to fill. Laveck had teamed with Tammie Spiel in No. 1 singles in a surprisingly strong combination, only losing 8-6 to Western Illinois' top pairing, who had the benefit of several years' experience as teammates. Up Next: The Panthers are off until Feb. 24, 2002, when they take on Northern Illinois in Milwaukee. The spring season will feature the Panthers taking on Horizon League rivals Detroit, UIC, Cleveland State, Butler and Youngstown State.
The spring season will conclude with the Horizon League Championships in Indianapolis on April 26-28, 2002.
