Panther Tennis Prepares for Spring BreakMarch 11, 2002 MILWAUKEE - The UWM tennis team has a week off before heading to Texas during the school's spring break for three matches. UWM lost a pair of matches this weekend, one in heartbreaking fashion. On Saturday, the Panthers lost to DePaul, who is currently ranked 74th in the nation and is ranked 10th among schools in the Great Lakes area. Sunday's match with Bradley nearly became the Panthers' first victory, as they fell, 4-3. UWM got three wins in singles play, as Tammie Spiel, Molly Caulk and Melissa Hackett each picked up a win. Julie Heling fell in three sets after winning the first set. The Numbers Game: UWM entered the fall season with more depth in terms of numbers than ever before, and that depth has been needed in the spring. The Panthers are currently playing without two of their top players, Erin Felber and Megan Brown. Brown (mononucleosis) will be out at least until after the Texas trip, while Felber is done for the year after needing surgery on her foot. Freshmen Firepower: The four freshmen have already made in impact on the Panther program. Megan Brown leads the team in wins with four, while Erin Felber finished her season with a 2-2 record. Tammie Spiel has also picked up a pair of wins, playing exclusively at No. 1 singles, while Melissa Hackett picked up her first collegiate win Sunday against Bradley.
Up Next: The Panthers head to Texas for three matches over spring break. The Panthers will face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas-Pan American and St. Mary's of Texas on Mar. 21-23. The rest of the spring season features the Panthers taking on Horizon League rivals Detroit, UIC, Cleveland State, Butler and Youngstown State, and will conclude with the Horizon League Championships in Indianapolis on April 26-28, 2002.
