Women's Soccer ties Marquette and Northwestern

Panthers play to scoreless weekend

April 27, 2004

CHICAGO, Ill. - Continuing its spring season, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team played to scoreless ties on Saturday afternoon against Marquette and Northwestern.

The spring season is a chance to see what lies ahead for the regular season in the upcoming fall. For Panthers head coach Michael Moynihan, getting to fall season is the key. The women's team has been depleted by injuries to key players such as Amanda Winn (knee), Elicia Scaife (ankle), Amber Jelinek (knee) and Brenda Andrews (concussion). Despite the injuries, the Panthers' still played well Saturday afternoon.

"It was a tough day to play," Moynihan said. "I don't know anybody that likes to play in the wind, but it was really blowing right on the lake in Chicago. I thought all in all, we competed well and defended reasonably well, but we were lacking in the final third. Liz Chudy held the ball well for us in the attack and was our most consistent threat, while Brenda Neigbauer gave some excellent penetrating passes. Despite the score line, I think we made a few small steps even in our attacking game.

Milwaukee will wrap up the spring season on Saturday, May 1 at 11 a.m. against the Chicago Cobras of the W-League and National Runner Up in the league. Saturday's game is scheduled to be held at Engelmann Field, but will move to the McKinley Marina fields should inclement weather arise. UWM's record this spring currently rests at 3-3-2.
