Panther Runners Each Win Twice at UIC InvitationalAug. 30, 2003 CHICAGO - Youth was served for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee cross country teams as they competed in the season-opening UIC Invitational here Saturday (Aug. 30). In a four-team meet that used dual-meet scoring, the UWM women finished 2-2 while the Panther men went 1-2 on the day. Milwaukee head coach Pete Corfeld ran a very young lineup, with just one junior and no seniors among the 14 runners competing. Strength in numbers appeared to be the name of the game on the women's side, as UWM took places 11-15 in the 45-person race. Sophomore Griffin McNulty paced the Panther attack, covering the two-mile course in 12:02. McNulty was followed in succession by Kourtney Nault, Maggie Seed, and Brittany Schoessow in slots 12-14. Sophomore Tenia Fisher finished 17th overall in a time of 12:48 while Teresa Braunreiter and Kris Gasser finished 20th and 21st respectively. UWM ran the tables on St. Francis and Chicago State 15-50, but fell to Horizon League foes UIC and Loyola, 15-40 and 15-42. On the men's side, Milwaukee defeated Chicago State 19-44 while dropping decisions to UIC and Loyola, 24-32 and 15-50. Three Panther freshman stood out in their debuts, led by Ben Uphoff who crossed the line in 21:16, good for a ninth place finish. Byron Kowalksi finished 13th in a time of 21:31 while Ryne Leuzinger covered the 4.1-mile course in 21:50. Sophomore Elliot Enright finished 20th in a time of 21:54 while Adam Swanson, Justin Gorman, and Gabe Wagoner finished 24th, 27th, and 29th.
Both the men's and women's teams will take next weekend off before competing again in two weeks. The Panthers will travel to West Lafayette, Ind. on Sept. 13th for the Purdue Invitational. The women's race is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. with the men's race to follow.
