UWM To Host Indoor Track Championships

Panthers look to regain titles on home track

Feb. 24, 2003

MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will host the 2003 Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend at the Klotsche Center on the UWM campus. The Panthers will be looking to reclaim the indoor titles after falling a year ago in Greencastle, Ind.

This weekend's meet will begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday with the long jump, pole vault and weight throw competitions. Running events will begin Saturday evening at 7 p.m., with mostly preliminary heats being held. The men's and women's 5000m and distance medley relays will be the only running event finals held on Saturday.

Sunday's action begins at 11 a.m. with the triple jump, high jump and shot put competitions. The running events will begin at 2 p.m., and will conclude with the presentation of team champion and runner-up and individual awards.

The women's team appears to be a favorite to reclaim the indoor championship, as UWM has the top mark in six of the 18 events. In addition, the Panthers have the five best times in the 60m dash and six of the top eight times in the 200m this season. The women's team, which returns 2002 league champions Nicole Frey (200m) and Stephanie Kenesie (long jump, triple jump), will be looking for their third championship, having won in 2000 and 2001.

The men's team will be searching for their sixth championship indoors, having had a streak of five-straight titles snapped a year ago. The men's team returns 2002 league champions Nick Davis (high jump) and Kyle Huebner (pole vault).

Information for the championships can be found on the official website of UWM Athletics, www.uwmpanthers.com. Full results will also be available on the website following the completion of each day's events.
