Panther Men Lead The Way At League ChampionshipsMay 12, 2005
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's track and field posted two league champions and took second in three more events to build a substantial lead on the first day of the 2005 Horizon League Championships, Thursday in Indianapolis, Ind. UWM sits in first place with 86 points, while Loyola sits second with 38. Junior Dan Schultz set a school and league record in winning the pole vault with a height of 15-9. Also this year's indoor champion, Schultz broke a school mark that he held with three other athletes, including junior Jeremiah Snyder, who placed second. Snyder cleared 15-1 in the event. In the hammer throw, junior Nick Wichert led a solid showing in the throws for Milwaukee, taking first with a throw of 180-11 3/4. Sophomore Nick Gretz placed third in the hammer, throwing 153-3 1/4, while leading three scorers in the javelin. Behind Gretz in second with his toss of 163-7 1/2 was freshmen Tim Robinson and Justin Bohler. Robinson was fifth with a throw of 150-6 1/4 and Bohler threw 138-3 to place sixth. Bohler was also UWM's top finisher in the long jump, where he took second ahead of teammates in third and fourth. After Bohler's leap of 22-3 1/4, freshmen Jeremy Tiedt cleared 21-6 3/4 for third and Darren Cole was fourth at 21-5. Thursday also saw the finals of the 3000m steeplechase and 10,000m, with a pair of Milwaukee runners scoring in each. Junior Josh Nygren ran the second-fastest time in school history as the runner up in the steeplechase, crossing the line in 9:16.77. Senior Micah Hanthorn took third in 9:24.21. Senior Bryan Hassemer and junior Nate Weiland finished a second apart in the 10,000m, taking fourth and sixth, respectively. Hassemer finished the distance in 31:34.74, ahead of Weiland in 31:35.17.
Four Panthers among the top five of the 800m and sophomore Trentin Edwards in the 100m highlighted day one's preliminaries at the meet. Junior Gabe Wagoner topped the 800m field with his time of 1:53.17, while the top five finishers each finished within a second of that time. Sophomore Justin Gorman was second (1:53.48), while junior Elliot Enright was fourth (1:53.57) and sophomore Jeremy Majors (1:53.98) was fifth. Edwards topped the 100m field, heading into the finals with a time of 11.23. The second and final day of the Horizon League Championships gets underway on Friday, as the Panthers are looking for their second-straight outdoor championship and seventh in eighth years. |
