Panthers Win Third-Straight Horizon League Outdoor Championship

Milwaukee boasts six wins on day two for eighth outdoor title in nine years

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 12, 2006) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's track and field team won six events on day two in winning a third-straight Horizon League Outdoor Championship, Saturday in Indianapolis.

Milwaukee won its eighth outdoor title in nine seasons by a margin of 72 points, finishing the meet with 254. Youngstown State was second with a score of 182 and UIC rounded out the top three with 100. Butler scored 51, Loyola 27 and Detroit 26 to complete the field.

Junior Trentin Edwards was the day's big winner, winning both the 100m and 200m for the second-straight year and garnering Outstanding Track Performer of the Meet honors. Freshman Adam Schleis was named Track Newcomer of the Year and head coach Pete Corfeld was named Coach of the Year for the 26th time in his career.

Edwards broke his own school record in winning the 200m, crossing the line in 21.55. That eclipsed his previous mark of 21.66. In the 100m, he topped the field with a time of 10.78.

Meanwhile, Schleis won the 110m hurdles on day two and was one of five Panther scorers in the triple jump. In the hurdles, he edged sophomore Justin Bohler for top honors with a time of 14.60, second-best in school history. Bohler, who also won the 400m hurdles in 55.60, completed the shorter hurdle event with a time of 14.61. Freshman Josh Zill was fourth in the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.56 and senior Billy McCarthy was third in the 400m hurdles in 58.26.

Senior Sean Cludy won the UWM-packed triple jump, leaping 47-4 1/4. Behind him came sophomore Darren Cole in second (47-2 1/2), Zill in third (46-3 1/2), Schleis fifth (44-4) and sophomore Jeremy Tiedt in sixth (41-5). Bohler then led the way in the high jump, where four Panthers scored. Behind Bohler in second (6-2) was Cole in fifth (5-10 3/4) and Tiedt and senior Kyle Huebner in a tie for sixth (5-8 3/4).

 

 

Not to be outdone, junior Jeremy Majors won the 800m with teammates in second and third. Majors crossed the line in 1:53.03, with senior Gabe Wagoner in second with a time of 1:53.45 and senior Elliot Enright third in 1:54.25. The trio also teamed with junior Justin Gorman for a second-straight 4x400m relay championship (3:19.64). UWM's 4x100m relay added a third-place finish (42.84), as Gorman added a third-place finish in the 1500m (3:58.95).

Huebner and junior Nick Gretz also earned all-league second team honors with second-place finishes in the meet's second day. Huebner finished the decathlon with 4,853 points as the runner-up, while Gretz was second in both the shot put (53-2 1/4) and discus (154-11). Sophomore Larry Ehrhorn was third in the shot put with a toss of 49-11.

Seniors Josh Nygren and Nate Weiland and sophomore Jay Schweitzer rounded out the team's scorers on day two. Nygren completed the 5000m in 15:58.31 for fourth and Weiland was sixth in the event with a time of 15:19.93. In the 400m, Schweitzer placed third in 49.85.
