Wichert, Edwards Lead UWM To Second After League Day One

Seniors break own school records on first day of league championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 10, 2007) - Seniors Nick Wichert and Trentin Edwards each broke school records on the first day of the 2007 Horizon League Championships to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's track and field team to second place after Thursday.

The Panthers, who are searching for their fourth-straight outdoor league title, sit second in the standings with 59 points. UIC leads the way with 82 points, while Detroit is a distant third with 29. Butler is currently fourth with 20, Youngstown State fifth with 17 and Loyola with two.

Wichert broke his own school and league record in the weight throw with his toss of 194-5. The distance surpassed the former standard by four inches. Senior Nick Gretz was fourth in the event with a throw of 158-9.

Sophomores Adam Schleis and Adam Podd were each all-league second teamers. Schleis took second with in the long jump with a leap of 22-7 3/4. Sophomore Patrick Casey also scored in the event, taking fifth with a jump of 21-8 1/4. Podd was second in the pole vault with a final height of 14-7 1/4.

Milwaukee got third-place finishes from sophomore Eric Pitt in the 3000m steeplechase and freshman Ryan Mleziva in the 10,000m. Pitt ran a personal-best time of 9:47.82, while Mleziva crossed the line in 33:21.76. Freshman Mike Sorenson also scored in the 10k with a time of 33:42.55.

Junior Justin Bohler led three scorers in the javelin by taking fourth place with a throw of 158-7. He edged Gretz in fifth place with a throw of 158-2. Freshman Shane Tiegen also scored in sixth, throwing 147-6.

 

 

Edwards, meanwhile, highlighted the preliminary events. The two-time defending 100m and 200m champ topped the field in both the 100m and 200m events. His 200m time broke school and league records and also qualified him for the NCAA Regionals. Edwards had set the 200m record of 21.27 just six days ago in Madison, Wis. Junior Lynn Koepke also qualified for the finals of both events.

The 800m prelims were also run with senior Jeremy Majors qualifying.
