Wichert Breaks Own Hammer Record At Big Blue Classic

Panthers sit fourth after first day of Eastern Illinois meet

CHARLESTON, Ill. (April 6, 2007) - Senior Nick Wichert broke his own school record in the hammer throw and won the event to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's track and field team into fourth place after the first day of the Big Blue Classic Friday in Charleston.

The Panthers are fourth with 48 points, while Indiana State leads the way at 75 points.

Wichert threw 194-1 to win the hammer throw and break his own school record set two weeks ago at the Southern Illinois Invitational. That mark (189-2) was bettered by almost five feet, while he will likely rise in the national rankings into the top 35. Senior Nick Gretz, meanwhile, was second with a throw of 167-4.

Sophomore Adam Schleis also placed third in the long jump with a leap of 22-7 3/4.

The second and final day of the Big Blue Classic gets underway Saturday at 9 a.m.
