Panther Throwers Dominate Purdue InvitationalApril 2, 2005
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Junior Nick Wichert broke his own school record in the hammer throw, and sophomore Nick Gretz won two events, to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's track and field team at the non-scoring Purdue Invitational, Saturday in West Lafayette, Ind. In addition to his record-breaking performance, Wichert also became the first Panther to qualify for the NCAA Regionals this season. Wichert's performance in the hammer throw highlighted a stellar performance by UWM throwers. He took third in the event, throwing 182-8 to obliterate his own record of 171-9, and eclipse the regional-qualifying mark of 182-6 1/4. Gretz went on to win both the shot put and discus events for Milwaukee. In the shot put, he threw 54-0 1/2, while freshman Larry Ehrhorn was third with a throw of 47-1 3/4. Gretz also logged a toss of 159-2 in winning the discus. Sophomore Trentin Edwards also won an event for Milwaukee, missing the school record in the 200m by three-hundredths of a second. He crossed the line in 21.70, tying the second-best time at UWM, to get the win. He also ran to a second-place finish in the 100m with a time of 10.94. The Panthers also got a win from the 4x400m relay. Juniors Elliot Enright, Gabe Wagoner, sophomore Jeremy Majors and freshman Jay Schweitzer combined on the first-place time of 3:19.30. Schweitzer led Enright and Wagoner among the top five of the 400m, taking second in 49.70. Enright was third in 49.91, while Wagoner took fifth in 50.35. Sophomore Justin Gorman also excelled in the middle distance, taking second in the 800m with a time of 1:54.40.
Two more top-four finishers for Milwaukee were junior Jeremiah Snyder in the pole vault and freshman Jeremy Tiedt in the long jump, while freshman Tim Robinson and junior Josh Nygren also posted sixth-place finishes. Snyder cleared 14-7 1/4 for second place, while Tiedt leapt 21-9 in taking fourth. Robinson placed sixth in the javelin with a throw of 144-11 and Nygren ran 4:07.41 to take sixth in the 1500m. UWM returns to action at the Big Blue Invitational, April 7-9, in Charleston, Ill. The meet gets kicked off on Thursday with the start of multi-events, while the rest of the meet runs on Friday and Saturday at Eastern Illinois. |
