Milwaukee Men Win Third-Straight League Indoor Championship
(TEAM SCORES AND AWARD WINNERS LISTED BELOW) KENT, Ohio (Feb. 26, 2006) - Sophomore Darren Cole won two events and four more Panthers picked up league titles on day two as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's track and field team won its third-straight Horizon League Indoor Championship Sunday in Kent, Ohio. The Panthers scored 164 points for their eighth title in 10 years. Youngstown State, the host school, was second with 132 points, while UIC was third with 82 and Loyola fourth with 76. Butler scored 53 points to take fifth and Detroit rounded out the field with 47 points. Head coach Pete Corfeld swept the men's and women's Coach of the Year honors for his 24th and 25th coaching awards. Freshman Adam Schleis was also named Field Newcomer of the Year. Cole was victorious in both the high jump and triple jump, leading three more Panthers in the top five of the latter. He cleared 6-2 1/4 for the high jump title and won the triple with a leap of 47-4 1/4. Freshman Josh Zill (46-0) was third in the triple jump, while senior Sean Cludy was fourth (45-1 3/4) and freshman Adam Schleis fifth (44-6 1/4). Sophomore Justin Bohler won the heptathlon and took second in thr 60m hurdles. He scored 4,659 points for the multi-event championship and ran a time of 8.40 in the hurdles. Senior Gabe Wagoner led the strong middle distance runners, winning the 800m and taking fifth in the 400m. In the 800m, he finished in 1:53.24, ahead of juniors Justin Gorman in third (1:54.12) and Jeremy Majors in fourth (1:54.54). Wagoner also posted a time of 49.42 in the 400m, with senior Elliot Enright finishing third in 48.69.
Gorman, Enright, senior Adam Swanson and junior Billy McCarthy capped the championship performance with first-place finish in the 4x400m relay in the day's final event. The quartet crossed the line in 3:19.85. Junior Nick Gretz rounded out the individual champions with a throw of 55-8 1/2 in the shot put. Sophomore Larry Ehrhorn took fifth in the event with a toss of 49-7 and senior Nick Wichert was fifth (48-8). Milwaukee also got scoring performances in the 200m, 1000m and 3000m. Junior Trentin Edwards was fourth in the 200m in 21.96, as was Swanson in he 1000m in 2:28.78. Seniors Nate Weiland and Josh Nygren finished fourth and fifth in the 3000m, with Weiland posting a time of 8:29.32 and Nygren finishing in 8:30.80.
