Panthers In Battle For Second After Day One Of ChampionshipsFeb. 22, 2006 CLEVELAND, Ohio - Freshman Robby Leibold set a new freshman record in the 1000 freestyle to highlight the efforts of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming & diving team at the first day of the Horizon League Championships. The Panthers closed the day in a three-team battle for second place with 109 points. Wright State sits directly above Milwaukee with 118, UIC with 122 and Cleveland State has 169 points. "I figured that us, UIC, Wright State and UW-Green Bay would be about the same heading into the meet," head coach Dave Clark said. "And lo and behold, after the first night, we are." Leibold took fifth-place with a new freshman standard of 9:30.92, narrowly missing the Milwaukee school record of 9:30.77 held by Michael Belting (2004). In one-meter diving, senior Jeff Jasinowski was the only Panther to make it to the finals, finishing seventh with 263.50 points. Both the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relay teams placed fifth. In the 200 free, seniors Kyle Fyock, Ryan Frohmader and Tim Watt, and sophomore Tyler Jefferson recorded a season-best time of 1:24.38, topping the mark of 1:24.51 set in December. In the 200 medley, sophomores Matt Howard and Tom Heitkamp, Gravengood and Fyock set another season-best, as their time of 1:33.90 eclipsed a time of 1:34.48 set earlier this season. "Our better events come later in the meet," Clark said. "I expect us to build from here." Day two of the championships starts with preliminaries at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, with finals scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
