LOOKING AT THE WEEK AHEAD:
Milwaukee closes out the regular season slate with the Midwest Invitational at the University of Chicago. The event is an NCAA "Last Chance" meet that will feature up to 20 teams, but only a few swimmers per school. Teams currently scheduled to appear include the Panthers, Carroll College, College of DuPage, Grinnell, Marquette, Wheaton College, DePaul and IIT. The meet starts Friday at 6 p.m.
LAST YEAR:
A year ago, four swimmers represented the UWM men's team at the Midwest Invitational, helping the Panthers to a fourth-place showing at the event. Paul Lewis led the way, placing second in the 1650 free and third in both the 200 and 500 free. Kyle Crow was 12th in the 200 free, Jason Schiessl placed third in the 1650 free and sixth in the 500 free and Dan Lawrence qualified for the finals in both the 100 fly and the 50 freestyle.
TRAVELING ROSTER:
Milwaukee will be sending four swimmers to the meet on the men's side. Senior Kyle Crow and freshmen Brian Heinz, Kevin Ladell and Jess Hardel will all be making the trip to Chicago for the weekend.
LAST TIME OUT:
Sophomore Chase Gravengood had two victories and freshman Robby Leibold set a UWM freshman record in the 1000 free, but it was not enough as the team lost to UW-Green Bay, 156-87, in Milwaukee Feb. 10.
Gravengood reeled off victories in the 200 IM and 200 butterfly. His time of 1:55.46 in the 200 IM beat second place (1:57.52) by over two seconds and his time of 1:56.16 in the 200 fly bettered second (1:59.37) by more than three.
Leibold tied David Faust's Panther freshman record with his time of 9:41.07 in the 1000 free, beating the field by over seven seconds. He placed second in the 500 free as well, touching the wall in 4:47.25.
Senior Jeff Jasinowski had a good showing, placing second on both boards to UW-Green Bay's Phil Zumstein. Jasinowski registered 271.80 points on the one-meter board and 300.30 points on the three.
HE'S GRAVEN"GOOD":
With victories in the 200 IM and 200 butterfly this past weekend, Chase Gravengood continues a stellar sophomore campaign. He has won 18-of-28 races overall, and has not finished below third this season.
ON TAP:
The Panthers prepare for their trip to Ohio next week for the Horizon League Championships. Action gets underway on Wednesday and continues through Saturday at Cleveland State.
