Scouting The Opposition

Northern Illinois: The Huskies of Northern Illinois University have easily been one of the surprise teams of the 2004 college soccer season. Under the direction of second-year head coach Steve Simmons, the Huskies are currently 11-4-1 on the season after finishing 3-13-1 in 2003. NIU will enter Friday's match on a four-game winning streak and winners of 10 of its last 11 after beginning the season 0-2-1. Freshman forward Curt Zastrow, from North Freedom, Wis., currently leads the Huskies in scoring with 16 points on seven goals and two assists while fellow freshman Fraser Gibson is second with 10 points on five goals. Sophomore Steve Goetz has been solid in goal with a 0.76 goals against average and five shutouts in 11 games. NIU has scored 29 goals on the season while allowing just 14.

Loyola: The Ramblers of Loyola University have struggled a bit in 2004 and will enter play this week with a 2-11-1 overall record and 1-4-0 mark in Horizon League matches. However, Loyola was victorious its last time out thanks to a 2-0 defeat of Cleveland State on Sunday. Senior midfielder Mark Eckerle leads the Loyola offensive attack with 11 points (4 goals, 3 assists) while junior forward Joe Nierzwicki has been dangerous with nine points on four goals and one helper. Tim Jenkerson has taken over the duties in goal for Loyola and owns a 1.69 goals against average with 33 saves and a .750 save percentage in eight games.

Panthers Look To Continue Winning Ways The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer will look to go on its first prolonged winning streak of the season when it plays a pair of games this week. UWM kicks things off on Friday (Oct. 22) when it plays host to Northern Illinois at 3:00 p.m. at Engelmann Field. Milwaukee will return to league action on Sunday (Oct. 24) and will play its final road contest of the season with a 2:00 p.m. start at Loyola. UWM is currently 5-4-3 on the season and 3-1-0 in Horizon League play.

John Lewang Cup On The Line Friday's game with Northern Illinois will mark the 31st showdown between the regional foes and former Midwestern Collegiate Conference rivals. In addition, the winner of the match claims the John Lewang Cup, which is named after the former NIU coach who was killed in a car accident prior to the 1981 season. UWM has won three consecutive games in the series and is currently in possession of the Cup following last season's 2-0 victory to start the season in Madison. Milwaukee leads the all-time series between the two schools 16-11-3 and has not allowed a goal to the Huskies since the 2000 season.

Offense Explodes In Pair Of Wins The wait is over for those anxious to see the high-powered UWM offense to kick into gear this season. Milwaukee scored eight goals in a pair of contests last week while holding its opposition to two goals. The Panthers began the week with a 5-1 defeat of UW-Green Bay on Wednesday before scoring three second half goals in a 3-1 defeat of Horizon League foe Wright State on Friday. The five goals versus UWGB mark a season-high for the Panthers while the eight goals in the two-game stretch are the most in back-to-back games since the 2002 team scored 10 goals versus Cleveland State and Oakland in the Horizon League Tournament title game and NCAA Tournament, respectively.

Antou Honored For Scoring Output Four goals. Two game-winners. Nine points. For some guys its a nice season. For Antou Jallow, its two games worth of work. The senior striker was recently named the Horizon League Player of the Week thanks to his scoring binge in a pair of Horizon League victories. Jallow scored the game-winner and notched an assist in Milwaukee's 5-1 victory over UW-Green Bay on Wednesday before scoring all three goals in the 3-1 triumph over Wright State. With this week's honor, Jallow has now won the Player of the Week award six times in his four-year career.

Winning Ways At Engelmann In addition to the obvious benefits of playing at home, the UWM men's soccer team is happy to return to Engelmann Field thanks to their recent domination on the home field. Since the 2001 campaign the Panthers have posted a 32-4-1 record at Engelmann Field and a 17-1-1 record against Horizon League competition. The lone loss came against Butler in the 2001 league championship game while the tie came last season versus UIC. In addition, the Panthers have won eight straight postseason games at Engelmann and 10 of their last 11.

Tough Times For Ellsworth It went from good to bad last week for UWM forward Cliff Ellsworth. The senior from Mequon enjoyed the first two-goal game of his career on Wednesday and then followed that up with an assist early in the second half versus Wright State. However, the speedy winger was injured on a hard tackle by a WSU player and suffered a left knee injury. The injury was serious enough to require surgery and Ellsworth will miss the remainder of the 2004 season. The Mequon-native has three goals and an assist on the season and five goals, nine assists and 19 points in his career.

Antou Climbs The Charts The Antou Jallow goal watch has now warranted serious monitoring. Thanks to four goals in two games this week, Jallow now has seven goals on the season and 49 in his career. The career number is good for a second-place tie with Peter Knezic (1977-80) on UWM's all-time list and is just four behind the 53 scored by all-time leader Tony Sanneh from 1990-93. Furthermore, the 49 career markers are good for sixth all-time in Horizon League history and just five behind the 54 scored by Detroit's Jorge Ferriera from 1995-98. Jallow already holds UWM single-game and single-season goal records with four (10/2/02) and 24 (2002), respectively.

Panthers Among League Leaders With its recent offensive resurgence, the UWM men's soccer team currently has three different players among the league offensive leaders. Antou Jallow sits fourth overall with 16 points and seven goals on the season but first in league-only games with six goals and 14 points. Dan Horst ranks ninth in points per game and goals per game with 0.86 and 0.43, respectively, while Dale Weiler leads the league in assists with seven. In league-only games Milwaukee has scored the most goals of the eight teams with 12 while holding the opposition to a league-low three goals. The +9 goal differential in league play is also tops in the loop.

Glance At The League Race With two weeks left in the regular season, the 2004 Horizon League race is almost as clouded as when the season began. Butler currently sits in first place with a 4-0 league mark, followed by Milwaukee at 3-1. Detroit sits third with a 3-2 mark with UW-Green Bay and UIC sitting fourth and fifth with identical 2-2-1 records. Wright State is in sixth place with a 2-3-1 mark while Loyola (1-4-0) and Cleveland State (0-3-1) bring up the rear. Since UWM and Butler have not played yet this season the Panthers still control their own destiny for the top spot and hosting rights in the 2004 Horizon League Tournament.
