First Round NCAA Tournament

Nov. 18, 2005

Recap |  Box Score |  Quotes

-Milwaukee won their first round NCAA Tournament game for the fourth-straight year. In 2004 they beat San Francisco 3-2, in 2003 it was a 4-1 win over Western Michigan and 2002 was a 2-1 victory over Oakland.

-The Panthers tied the school record with their 12th shutout of the season. They have now equaled the record set by the 1979 squad.

-Freshman goalkeeper Grant Fernstrum tied the school record with his 10th shutout tonight. John Mroz had 10 clean sheets in 1990 to establish the mark. He lowered his goals against average to 0.38 in the process.

-Fernstrum recorded his fifth-straight shutout this evening, the second time this season that he has done that, matching the feat he accomplished Oct. 4-16 earlier this fall. He extended his scoreless streak to 450 minutes, good for fifth in the UWM record book. Fernstrum had a scoreless streak of 584:48 earlier this season.

-Junior Steve Sperl scored the game-winner in the first round of the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight season. Last season, his goal with under three minutes remaining knocked off No. 16 San Francisco. Three of his five goals this season have come against Bradley.

-Milwaukee's 21 shots on the night were the second-highest total of the season. Only the 25 shots versus UIC (Oct. 12) rank higher.

-The Panthers have not allowed a goal in the first half since their Oct. 2 game versus Detroit, a span of 13 matches.

-UWM improved to 3-0-1 all-time against Bradley with the victory.

-Bradley goalkeeper Chris Dunsheath finished his career with 8197 minutes played, third-best all-time in NCAA history. UWM had his number this season, beating him twice including a season-high three goals allowed in the Panthers Sept. 13 victory in the regular season.
