Track Continues Building Toward Outdoor Chamionships
Panthers to compete at Kansas Relays and Indiana State Pacesetter Invitational this weekend
April 16, 2002 MILWAUKEE - After strong showings the past two weekends in Illinois, the UWM track and field teams will compete in two separate events to continue building on their outdoor momentum. Several Panthers will head to Lawrence, Kan., for the Kansas Relays, while the remaining team members will travel to Terre Haute, Ind., for the Indiana State Pacesetter Invitational. Last Week The Panthers competed in the Lee Calhoun Memorial at Monmouth, Ill., and came away with a second-place finish on the women's side and a third-place finish on the men's side. Stephanie Kenesie won the 100m Hurdles and the triple jump and added a fourth-place finish in the 200m to pace the women, while Kyle Huebner was second in the pole vault and third in the javelin to lead the men. Numerous athletes on both sides set personal records on the day, helped by the near-ideal weather conditions. This Week The men's 4x800m relay team is among the group going to the Kansas Relays this weekend, as they look to improve on their own school record time of 7:34.79, which they set two weeks ago at the Eastern Illinois Invitational. The team of B.J. Blake, Joe Tuttle, Nick Viall and Cornelius Hill has the fourth-fastest seed time entered in the Kansas Relays. Also going to Kansas will be Stephanie Kenesie, Kristy Naef, Katie Seep and Abby Hurst. Each of the four will compete in their individual events and together in the sprint medley relay. Setting the Pace The remainder of the team will compete in the Pacesetter Invitational at Indiana State. The Panthers competed with the Sycamores at the Eastern Illinois Invitational, and Indiana State came away with team wins on both the men's and women's sides. Eastern Illinois, Valparaiso and Wright State's women's track team will be among the schools competing. On The Horizon The Panthers have only a few meets remaining before the Horizon League Championships, which will be held on May 9 and 10 in Indianapolis, Ind. Next weekend, the team will split again, as part of the team will head to Des Moines, Iowa, for the Drake Relays, while the remainder of the team will compete at the UIC Invitational in Chicago. On May 3, UWM will compete across town at the Marquette Invitational in their final tune-up before the league meet. |
