Field Events Shine at Purdue Invitational
Hurst wins 3000m steeplechase, while Panthers collect several-second place finishes
March 30, 2002 MILWAUKEE - Abby Hurst took first place in the 3,000m steeplechase to collect the top Panther finish Saturday at the Purdue Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind. UWM got some excellent performances in the field events and also managed to come away with several top-10 finishes in the running events. The meet, which was to have been spread out over two days, was completed entirely on Saturday due to inclement weather on Friday. For the women, Kristy Naef and Nicole Frey gave UWM two top-10 finishers in the 100m dash, with Naef finishing fourth and Frey taking ninth. Katie Seep added an eighth-place finish in the 400m dash to round out the women's sprints. Abby Hurst had the only top-10 finish in the longer distances, but she made sure it was worth it, taking first in the steeplechase. Stephanie Kenesie led the way in the Panther field events, taking second in both the long jump and the triple jump. She also took fourth place in the javelin throw after being the eighth and final qualifier into the finals. Lynda Thiel added a pair of fourth-place finishes in the pole vault and high jump. On the men's side, Mike Pierrard took ninth in the men's 100m dash, while Adam Hobler added a 10th-place finish in the 400m dash. Cornelius Hill had a pair of top-10 finishes, taking ninth in the 800m and finishing fifth in the 1,500m run. Steve Saul added a seventh-place finish in the 1,500m, while Pat Harrington finished sixth in the 10,000m run. For the men in field events, Jon Manke led the way with second-place finish in the discus. Manke would add a sixth-place finish in the shot put. Kyle Huebner and Nick Davis tied for ninth in the high jump, while Huebner was seventh in the pole vault. Davis would also take sixth in the long jump. Ken Hunt chipped in with a third-place finish in the triple jump. The Panthers return to action next weekend when they travel to Charleston, Ill., to compete in the Eastern Illinois Invitational. |
