Sept. 18, 2007

INDIANAPOLIS -- Green Bay senior setter Betty Slinger (Faribault, Minn.) has been honored as the U.S. Army Horizon League Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. It is the second time in her career (Oct. 24, 2006) that she has taken home the award.

Slinger is the second Green Bay student-athlete to win the award this semester, joining men's cross country runner Ryan Miller (Sept. 5). Green Bay is the only school in the 10-team league to have more than one recipient thus far this year.

Slinger was named to the Gopher Invitational's all-tournament team for her performance in the Phoenix's three matches over the weekend. She averaged 8.78 assists, 2.11 kills, and 3.00 digs per game, while hitting .311 for the week. Slinger hit .667 with eight kills against No. 13 Minnesota, while earning a double-double with 35 assists and 15 digs in Green Bay's 3-0 win over Charlotte.

On the year, she ranks among the league's top five in hitting percentage (2nd, .358) and assists (5th, 10.03 per game). Slinger, who led the nation last year in triple-doubles with 11, has posted 15 in her stellar career.

Academically, Slinger maintains a 3.818 grade-point average as a human biology major, with minors in chemistry and Spanish. She has been a two-time member of the Horizon League All-Academic Team as well as a member of the CoSIDA Academic All-District V First Team. Slinger's academic efforts also aided Green Bay in receiving the AVCA Academic Team Award last year.

The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours, and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of league faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
