The IPFW volleyball team won for the 15th time in its last 17 matches while extending the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay's losing streak to four straight as the Mastodons posted a 30-16, 30-22, 30-26 victory over the Phoenix Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore middle blocker Abby Bergsma tied for a match high with 13 kills for UW-Green Bay (10-14), while Rebekah Roehm and Cynara Martins each had 13 put-aways for IPFW (21-10). Megan Elfering led the Phoenix with a match-high 15 digs.
The Mastodons hit .241 for the match compared to .122 for the Phoenix. UW-Green Bay held a 9-8 advantage in blocks, including six by freshman Lynsey Thiel, but the Phoenix hurt itself with 13 service errors.
IPFW jumped all over UW-Green Bay in the first game, soaring out to a 19-5 lead. The hosts hit an impressive .406 as a team in the opening frame in cruising to the win.
Hitting errors cost the Phoenix in the second set as it managed just eight kills to go along with nine miscues in leading to a -.021 hitting percentage. Another slow start prevented UW-Green Bay from challenging as it dug itself a 10-3 deficit out of the gates. The Phoenix would get back within four at 24-20, but could get no closer.
UW-Green Bay finally got its offense clicking in the third game. Despite trailing 20-14, the Phoenix mounted a rally in an attempt to extend the match. An 11-4 run gave the visitors a 25-24 lead, but UW-Green Bay was unable to hold on as IPFW scored six of the last seven points to finish off the win.
The Phoenix will try to get back in the win column at 7 p.m. Friday when it hosts Loyola at the Phoenix Sports Center.
