GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Green Bay volleyball team grabbed the first game Saturday afternoon against Valparaiso, but the Crusaders stormed back to take the next three and the Horizon League match (22-30, 30-25, 30-23, 30-24) at the Kress Events Center. Green Bay (4-13, 2-6) ran into a hot serving team in Valparaiso (14-5, 5-2), who notched 12 service aces, including 11 over the final two games. In the pivotal third game, Green Bay held a 22-20 lead when Valparaiso scored to get the serve for Tiffany Meikle. Meikle proceeded to lace four aces in the next five points as Valparaiso scored seven unanswered, turning a two-point deficit into a five-point advantage. That momentum carried into game four, as Green Bay held just one lead (12-11) in the match-clinching game. Game two ended when a three-point run by the Crusaders gave them a 30-25 win. In game one, the score was tied 20-20 before the Phoenix rallied with the next six points off the serve of Nikki Hintze (Menomonee Falls, Wis.). That scoring outburst turned a see-saw game into a 30-22 victory. Hintze finished just two kills shy of her eighth double-double in the last nine matches. Green Bay forced Valparaiso into just a .022 hitting percentage in game one, but the Crusaders hit better than .200 in each of the final three games. For the match, Green Bay hit .168, while Valpo hit .187. Liesl Tesch (New Berlin, Wis.) led the home team with 14 kills, while Abby Bergsma (Appleton, Wis.) added 10. Betty Slinger (Faribault, Minn.) had 38 assists and Megan Elfering (Bristol, Wis.) posted 30 digs. Green Bay has a pair of home league matches next weekend. The Phoenix hosts UIC Friday at 7 p.m. and Loyola Saturday at 4 p.m. --uwgbathletics.com-- |
