MILWAUKEE, WI -
The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay women's soccer team (6-3-2, 1-1-1 Horizon League) had its seven-game unbeaten streak halted Wednesday evening as UW-Milwaukee tallied two goals late in the second half to defeat the visiting Phoenix 3-2.
Phoenix leading scorers Stephanie Gross and Jennie Gorwitz both scored in the match, with Gross' goal in the 77th minute giving UW-Green Bay a 2-1 lead.
But UW-Milwaukee (9-2-1, 2-0-0) responded with the tying goal just 19 seconds after Gross' strike and converted on a penalty kick with 2:23 remaining in the game to improve its unbeaten streak to six games.
UW-Green Bay goalkeeper Brooke Wikgren suffered the loss despite a career-high 10 saves. Entering the game, Wikgren's career-best was eight stops - a total she matched in the first half alone. UW-Milwaukee's Erin Kane tallied just one save on three UW-Green Bay shots on goal.
UW-Milwaukee took the 1-0 lead in the 13th minute when Stacey Faude notched her first goal of the season. It was one of nine shots on goal for UWM in the first half, as the Panthers out-shot the Phoenix 14-4 in the stanza. UWM finished with a 28-6 shots advantage for the game.
But the Phoenix responded in the 64th minute when Gorwitz scored her seventh goal of the season to knot the game at 1-1. The Phoenix goal was the first score allowed by UW-Milwaukee in their last six matches.
In the 77th minute the Phoenix took a 2-1 lead when Gorwitz connected with Gross as Gross notched her seventh score of the season with 76:24 gone in the match.
But just 19 seconds later the Panthers tied the game back up when Faude got her second goal of the game when she gathered a loose ball from close range and got a shot past the Phoenix defense.
Joanna Severson converted on the UWM penalty kick in the 88th minute, which proved to be the match-winning goal.
Along with the lopsided shots total, UW-Milwaukee finished with an 8-2 ledger in corner kicks.
