The Green Bay women's soccer team tallied its first win of the 2007 campaign Sunday afternoon as the Phoenix defeated Horizon League foe Cleveland State 1-0 in overtime in Cleveland. Green Bay (1-8-0, 1-2-0) ended its longest losing streak since the 2000 campaign with the shutout.
Freshman Chelsea Lyons (Coon Rapids, Minn.) scored her first collegiate goal in the 94th minute, connecting with junior Sharon Zurbey (New Brighton, Minn.) off a long free kick. Lyons gathered the ball as she broke through the Cleveland State backline and beat Vikings goalkeeper Kelly Zinkiewich.
Green Bay and Cleveland State matched each other offensively, as both teams fire 12 shots on the day. While the Vikings had a 10-5 advantage in shots in the second half, Green Bay notched a 9-5 ledger in shots on goal.
Green Bay's Brooke Wikgren (Champaign, Ill.) registered five saves for her ninth career shutout, which is second-best in team history. Zinkiewich made eight saves in the loss, as Cleveland State dropped to 3-8 on the year.
The Phoenix returns home Wednesday for three home contests in five days, starting with instate rival Milwaukee at 7 p.m. Youngstown State will face Green Bay on Friday, and the Phoenix will wrap up the homestand with Drake at noon Sunday.
