The Green Bay men's soccer team (5-2-2, 1-0-0) opened Horizon League action Wednesday afternoon, as the Phoenix posted a 1-0 victory over league newcomer Valparaiso at Eastgate Field.
Freshman JC Banks (Milwaukee, Wis.) scored his third goal in two games and his fourth goal of the season with his first-career game-winning goal. Banks shook the nets with a header in the 81st minute off a long throw-in from Tyler Rosenberg (Grafton, Wis.) Francois Basty (Beauzelle, France) also had an assist on the play with a header-flick to Banks.
Junior goalkeeper Adam Stikl (Milwaukee, Wis.) made two saves for his third solo shutout of the year and the fourth for Green Bay this season. With 90 minutes of scoreless soccer, Stikl's shutout streak extended to over 330 minutes with the win.
Green Bay out-shot the Crusaders 24-8, including a 14-3 advantage in the first half.
Valparaiso (2-6-1, 0-2-1) goalkeeper Ryan Schwarz made four saves in the setback.
Green Bay takes its six-game unbeaten streak into Saturday's home contest with Ohio State in a battle of two of the top 10 teams in the Great Lakes Region. Kickoff against the Buckeyes is slated for 7 p.m. at Santaga Stadium.
