Career nights from sophomore Lindsey Sherburne and junior Kristen Hurst allowed No. 21 San Diego (11-3) a four-game win over visiting Dayton (11-6) Saturday night. The Toreros overcame a 23-20 deficit in game four to remain undefeated on its home floor this season. Individual game scores went (30-26, 25-30, 36-34, 30-25).

Lindsey Sherburne (Saratoga, CA) added to her national top-5 average in assists per game, serving up a career-high 74 on Saturday. Sherburne would also total 11 digs and seven kills. Kristen Hurst (Bakersfield, CA) provided San Diego with a match-high 21 kills and clutch points during the USD rally in game four.

As a team four Toreros reached double figures in kills. Freshman attackers Christie Dawson (Apple Valley, CA) and Cassie Wolpern (Belle Plaine, MN) combined to total 30 kills Saturday. Junior Devon Forster (Boulder, CO) put up 20 kills and joined Hurst and teammate Jackie Bernardin (Bakersfield, CA) in tallying a match-best 16 digs.

Loyola Marymount 3, Fairfield 0
No. 24 Loyola Marymount (14-2) defeated Fairfield (2-15) in three games (30-16, 30-17, 30-18) Saturday evening in San Diego. Middle blocker Kelli Nerison hit .750, posting 13 kills and four blocks in the one hour and 22 minute victory. The Lions led the Stags in hitting in every game, including a .533 percentage in the second game. In addition to Nerison’s hitting efforts, senior Kealani Kimball added 15 kills with her .500 attack percentage. LMU posted 41 digs compared to the Stags’ 27. Kimball and sophomore Tiffiny Self each recorded nine digs to lead the Lions. Loyola Marymount has now won three straight contests, defeating San Diego State and Dayton earlier this week.

The Saint Mary’s women’s volleyball defeated host TCU by the final score of 3-0 to take the championship match of the 2003 TCU Molten Invitational. Game scores of the Gaels victory over the Horned Frogs were 30-19, 30-22, and 30-28. With the victory the Gaels captured their third tournament title of the season and now possess and overall record of 13-4 while the Horned Frogs fell to 13-4. Once again the Gaels offense exploded to carry the Gaels to victory. The team dominated much of the match by finishing with a 54 kills and 54 assists. The Gaels helped themselves by finishing with a .400 attacking percentage to the Horned Frogs .187. Saint Mary’s defense also stepped up big with a total of 14 block assists to TCU’s four.

Earlier in the day, the Saint Mary’s women’s volleyball team blanked Texas A&M-Corpus Christi by a final score of 3-0. Game scores of the Gaels victory over the Falcons were 30-10, 30-13, and 30-7.

The Gaels dominance at the 2003 TCU Molten Invitational was overtly obvious as the team never lost a game in a total of four matches on the weekend. Saint Mary’s now the most wins in more than a decade. The last time the Gaels won at least 13 matches was during the 1990 season when the team finished with an overall record of 13-19. Head coach Jon Stevenson also reached a milestone when the Gaels defeated TCU. With the victory Stevenson now possesses and overall record of 22-22 as the head coach at Saint Mary’s. His .500 winning percentage is only second to that of Joan Tamblim’s (1982-1987) .688. However, it is the highest winning percentage since the Gaels moved to Division I play in 1987.
