Emma Murphy Honored as a Breitbard Star of the Month
May 16, 2005 By Roland Hu, USD Media Relations San Diego, Calif. - The San Diego Hall of Champions announced today that tennis player Emma Murphy was chosen as one of the Breitbard Stars of the Month for April. Among the other honorees include professional golfer Phil Mickelson, Major League Baseball players Jake Peavy (Padres) and Mark Prior (Cubs). For a complete listing of winners, please click here . The native of Cork, Ireland has had a smashing season thus far. By virtue of her 23-7 overall record, she has garnered a national ranking of No. 35 after beating seven ranked players, including No. 19 Zsuzsanna Fodor of Mississippi State and No. 22 Margarita Karnaukhova of Sacramento State. After leading the Toreros to a second-place finish at the 2005 West Coast Conference Championships in late April, Murphy was named to the All-WCC Singles Team for the third straight year. In addition, coaches agreed that she was the conference's most outstanding player once again, claiming her second consecutive WCC Player of the Year honor. Murphy is scheduled to compete in the 2005 NCAA Singles Tournament, held in Athens, Georgia beginning May 23.
