April 23, 2005
San Diego, Calif. - Loyola Marymount women's tennis had 31st-ranked San Diego at a 3-3 tie in the semifinals of the West Coast Conference Championships Saturday, but was edged 4-3 by the second-seeded host Toreros. The match began with the doubles play and San Diego was able to strike first, as Tamara Tanner and Kimi Kaloi fell by a score of 8-3. LMU stayed in the doubles point when Serena Fermin and Patrycia Hubl came away with an 8-4 victory at No. 3, but USD came away with an 8-6 win over Carla Arguelles and Robyn Baker at the No. 2 position to give San Diego the 1-0 lead. The Lions tied the match after Baker defeated Brown 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 position in singles play, although USD's Emma Murphy pushed her team back into the lead with her 6-1, 6-0 victory over Arguelles on Court 1. At the No. 6 position, Patrycia Hubl got the best of Jenna Anderson 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 to once again tie the match 2-2. However, Lauren Kazarian put USD in the lead with a solid showing at the No. 2 spot, beating Serena Fermin 7-5, 6-2. LMU battled the second-seeded Toreros, as Tamara Tanner took out Helene Lindstrand 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 on Court 4, setting up Lauren Perl's late game heroics at the No. 3 spot. After losing the first set 6-3 to Kaloi, Perl came back to secure the team victory by winning the next two sets 6-3, 6-4.
"As you can see, we were competitive all the way through," LMU Head Coach Jamie Sanchez said. "We didn't get the fourth point and San Diego did, which really puts an emphasis on the doubles point. We were really close and it made a big difference in the match because that match [No. 3] could have gone either way. Our athletes did everything that was asked of them and they did everything possible to be competitive." San Diego improves its record to 9-10 on the season, while Loyola Marymount falls to 10-13. #31 San Diego 4, LMU 3 Doubles (San Diego wins the doubles point) Singles Order of finish: 5, 1, 6, 2, 4, 3 |
