Sophomore midfielder Janelle Hillseth scored at the 82:38 mark lifting the No. 25 ranked Pepperdine women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over crosstown rival USC in a first round match played Friday at UCLA's Drake Stadium.

Passes from freshmen Jenna Ainsworth and Ali Pavoni set up Hillseth, who beat USC goalie Shaelyn Fernandes into the lefthand corner of the goal. Making its first-ever appearance at the NCAA Championships, Pepperdine improves its overall record to 12-4-3 and advances to a second round match on Sunday (November 18) afternoon at 1 p.m. against either Cal State Fullerton or UCLA.

USC ended the season with an overall mark of 10-7-2. Pepperdine had not beaten the Trojans since 1994, and today's win snapped a six-match USC winning streak in the series.

Senior goalkeeper Lindsey Brouillette recorded her seventh shutout of the season as she was credited with four saves. Pepperdine outshot USC by a narrow 9-8 margin in a match that was evenly contested.
