The Santa Clara University women's soccer team concluded the 2001 regular season with a convincing 4-0 win over Colorado College on Senior Night at Buck Shaw Stadium. Although it was senior night, it was a freshman who dominated the game as Leslie Osborne scored her 10th and 11th goals of the season while assisting on the game-winner to lead the Broncos to victory on a rainy night in Santa Clara. The score remained at scoreless at intermission despite the Broncos' constant offensive attack that forced the Colorado College netminder, Meghann Loseke, to make five saves. Devvyn Hawkins started the scoring for the Broncos in the 51st minute when she headed home the first goal of the game off passes from Osborne and Danielle Slayton. Santa Clara kept the offensive pressure on in second half, taking 13 more shots and forcing Loseke to make six more saves. Finally in the 77th minute the Broncos broke through with another goal, Osborne's first of the night off an assist from Kristi Candau. Osborne would add her second of the night just four minutes later off a terrific pass from Slayton who picked up her seventh assist of the season. The Broncos concluded the evening when Kristi Candau netted a penalty kick inthe 84th minute after Veronica Zepeda was taken down inside the penalty box. Erin Sharpe and Ynez Carrasco combined on the shutout for the Broncos, but it was the defense in front of the Santa Clara netminders that made the shutout happen. The defensive four, led by Slayton, allowed Colorado College to take only one shot on the night. The Broncos will find out their next opponent when the NCAA announces the 64 participants of the 2001 Championship on Monday at noon. Santa Clara earned an automatic berth into the tournament by winning the WCC Championship last week. An expansion from last year's 48-team draw, this year's tournament will see 27 other conferences awarded automatic berths with 36 teams receiving at-large selections. Four teams will be selected to 16 sites with the first and second rounds being played on November 16 and 18 respectively. The third round will be held November 23-25 and the quarterfinals will be played November 30-December 2. The 2001 Women's College Cup will be held December 7 and 9 at Gerald J.
