Oct. 30-Sophomore defender Ashley Swanson was named to Soccer America's "Team of the Week" for her play against nationally-ranked Santa Clara and San Diego last weekend, it was announced on Wednesday.
Swanson, a steady force in the back for Pepperdine all season, turned in a pair of solid performances to help the Waves defeat defending national champion Santa Clara and San Diego. Against Santa Clara, Swanson was a key player in helping Pepperdine register a 1-0 victory over the Broncos. Santa Clara had been on an offensive roll in its previous four matches, outscoring its opponents 17-1. It marked just the third time this season that Santa Clara has been shutout. The Broncos managed just nine shots (four on goal) in the match. In a 3-1 victory over San Diego on Sunday, Swanson assisted on the Waves' final goal and helped limit the Toreros to four shots. The recognition comes two days after being named the West Coast Conference's (WCC) "Player of the Week." Pepperdine begins play this week ranked No. 8 nationally and currently shares the lead in the WCC with perennial conference and national powers Portland and Santa Clara. The Waves are 14-1-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
