Pepperdine shuts out Santa Clara 1-0 San Diego and Saint Mary's also get conference wins

 
 
 

 

 
 
Pepperdine 1, Santa Clara 0
The fourth-ranked Santa Clara University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision at 12th-ranked Pepperdine today despite outshooting the Waves by a 9-4 margin, including a 5-1 edge in the first half.

Pepperdine junior midfielder Janelle Hillseth scored at the 46:57 mark of the second half to lift Waves to their second-straight home victory over SCU and move the Waves into a first-place tie between the two teams in the West Coast Conference.

With the win, Pepperdine became the first WCC team to defeat Santa Clara and Portland in the same year and marked the first loss for the Broncos in league play this season.

San Diego 2, LMU 1
The Loyola Marymount University women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to the University of San Diego in rainy, cold conditions on Friday afternoon at Sullivan Field.

San Diego was given a penalty kick at the 77:51 mark of the second half on a hand ball call against the Lions. The Toreros Brenna Mullen capitalized to give her team a win in West Coast Conference action. San Diego improves to 9-5-2 overall and 2-2-0 in the WCC, while the Lions drop to 9-5-2 and 2-2-0 in conference. The teams combined for 44 fouls, 24 coming against the Lions.

Laura Trask scored on a free kick for LMU.

The Lions will host defending national champion Santa Clara this Sunday, Oct. 27 at 1 p.m.

Saint Mary's 2, Gonzaga 1
The Saint Mary's College Gaels (9-7-1,3-1-0) edged the Gonzaga University Bulldogs (5-10-0,0-4-0) 2-1 in West Coast Conference play Friday afternoon at Garaventa Field.

The Gaels used two first-half goals to secure the win as Jennifer Barbera connected an unassisted shot into the upper right corner of the goal in the eighth minute of play. Sarah Takekawa put the insurance goal into the upper left corner of the net at 26:36 on assists from Sarah Churchill and Katie Fagundes. Sarah Burgess led Saint Mary's offense with 10 shots and three on goal.

Bulldog forward Heidi Jacobson threatened the Gael's lead at 39:14 with an unassisted shot into the far right corner of the goal.

Portland 3, USF 0
Christine Sinclair scored two goals Friday, and Lindsey Huie added a goal and an assist as #4 Portland beat San Francisco 3-0. Portland improves to 13-3-1 (3-1-0) in the standings, as the Dons fall to 7-7-1 (0-4-0) after facing their second top-five opponent in five days.

Portland has been averaging 20 shots per game this season - a league-high - but was limited to only 13 by the Dons defense, including goalie Jennifer Orantes who made nine saves on the night.
