The Saint Mary's women's soccer team (12-0-1) handed the 25th-ranked Pepperdine Waves their first loss of the season in a double-overtime thriller on Friday, at Garaventa Field.

Both teams had there opportunities throughout the game but neither team was able to connect throughout regulation. In the first half the Gaels outshot the Waves six to two. In the second-half it looked as if the Waves would be the first to score pushing the ball deep and often in the Gaels territory. The Waves outshot the Gaels 9-7. Regulation soon ended with a 0-0 tie as both teams seemed frustrated.

In overtime the Gaels fought hard in this physical battle that consisted of 40 fouls (Pepperdine 27, Gaels 13), neither team was able to get a shot off in the first overtime.

Both teams looked as if they were running out of energy late in the second overtime as the Gaels continued to pressure the Pepperdine defense.. With a little over a minute and a half left in the game the Gaels were awarded their 11th corner of the day. This time freshman Katie Frattone posted one in the middle of the goalie box and after a scramble in front of the net sophomore Lucianne Crenshaw was able to get her seventh shot of the day off, scoring the game-winner deep in the left corner. Sophomore Chelsea Montero tallied the assist.

The Gaels junior goalkeeper Ruth Montgomery recorded her 7.5 shutout on the season as she tallied six saves. The Waves goalkeeper, Lidsey Brouilette recorded 10 saves in the loss.
