The Saint Mary's women's soccer team (6-6-1) defeated the Long Beach State 49ers (3-7-3), 1-0, in overtime on Thursday, October 10 on Garaventa Field. Sarah burgess scored the game-winner for the Gaels.

In the first half, the Gaels outshot Long Beach State 4-0, while play primarily stayed in the middle of the field. SMC had a couple of opportunities but were unable to find the back of the net ending the half with a 0-0 tie.

With 3:36 left in the first overtime, Shauna Rech attempted a shot from 20-yards out. Rech's shot sat around the front of the 49ers goal as a mad scramble was soon to follow. Sarah Burgess was able to get a foot on it, ending all 49er hopes as the Gaels went on to a 1-0 victory.

SMC's goalkeeper Ruth Montgomery earned her first shutout of the season, bringing her career total to 30 and one shy of tying the school record. She also recorded four saves, while the 49ers Hannah Cochrun tallied three saves.

As the two teams battled for possession at midfield, senior Myka Peck broke free and led Schroeder for the shot from the right wing. It was Peck's second assist of the season. Schroeder and Peck now lead the team with eight points a piece.
