Sept. 15-The Saint Mary's Gaels took a step in the right direction by tieing #11 Cal on Sunday. Also around the WCC, Santa Clara bounced back from their second loss of the season to defeat Cal Poly 1-0, while Pepperdine remained the league's lone undefeated team routing Fresno State 7-1. Saint Mary's 1, #11 California 1 The Gaels were the first to score with 8:21 left in the second half as Burgess fired a shot past the keeper on an assist from Sarah Takekawa. This was Burgess second goal on the season. Cal tied up the score with fourteen seconds left on the clock to send the game into overtime. Brittany Kirk headed in a shot to the left corner after a scramble in front of the goal. SMCs Ruth Montgomery finished the game with six saves, while Cals Sani Post tallied eight saves.
Pepperdine 7, Fresno State 1 2ot Junior forward Lacey Ubaldi was the catalyst for the Waves as she scored two goals and had two assists. Pepperdine also received goals from freshman forward Megan Woods, senior forward Kristi Bissonnette, sophomore forward Ali Pavoni, freshman midfielder April Pettigrew and sophomore forward Jenna Ainsworth. With the win, the Waves improved to 5-0-1 on the season and have outscored their opponents 22-3 in their five wins. Fresno State dropped to 1-5-0 on the year.
Loyola Marymount 2, Vanderbilt 1
Loyola Marymount (4-1-0 Overall) fell behind early when Vanderbilt's (1-3-0 Overall) Marissa O'Leary beat Lions' goalkeeper Elizabeth Skhal in the 33rd minute for the first score of the game. The Lions would take a 1-0 deficit going into the half despite leading in shots 8-5.
The second half was all Lions as well as they again outshot the Commodores 5-1. Junior Haleigh Roach would get LMU back in the game with her unassisted goal at 43:39 on the clock. The Lions would hold on to send things into double overtime before claiming the win. Beren's game-winning goal in the 107th minute came as she beat VU's goalkeeper Esther Thompson on a penalty kick attempt. The Lions finish the weekend with a 1-1 record after falling to No.13 Wake Forest on Day 1 of the tournament.
San Diego 3, Long Beach State 0
Junior midfielder Marie-Claude Henry got the Toreros on the scoreboard first in the 9th minute of play. She stole the ball from a 49er defender and blasted in from 15 yards out for her second goal of the season. Junior Brenna Mullen (Torrey Pines HS) made it 2-0 in the 33rd minute when she headed in her 5th goal of the year off an assist from senior Rebecca Smith.USD held a 2-0 halftime advantage at which point they had outshot 'The Beach' 7-2. Freshman Lee Ann Klopschinski tallied USD's 3rd goal of the day in the 76th minute of play. She was assisted by Brooke Roby and scored in close after Roby's hard shot deflected off a defender; it was Klopschinski's team-leading 7th goal of the season.
#6 Portland 2, Denver 0
Wanda Rozwadowska's goal at 7:30 gave Portland some breathing room in their third game in three days, and just over five minutes later, Lindsey Huie's first career goal put the Pilots comfortably ahead 2-0. The Pilots played superb possession soccer for the remainder of the game, and goalie Cristin Shea made six pedestrian saves for her second shutout of the season. Portland outshot Denver 8-3 in the first half, 11-8 in the game.
