Women's Rowing Posts Best Finish Ever at WCC Championships

Rancho Cordova, CA - The Saint Mary's women's rowing team posted a second place finish at the 2007 West Coast Conference Championships. The varsity eight finished second in their race, to pull the Gaels into a three-way tie with Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara for second place. The second place finish is the best finish for the SMC rowing team at the WCC Championships. The 2007 WCC Rowing Championship began with the varsity four taking the water at Lake Natoma at noon. In the 2K race, Saint Mary's posted a fifth place finish to garner just one point toward the overall team championship. The Gaels' boat of coxswain Desire Lopez, Michelle Nenzel, Olivia Haro, Shannel Benisano and Kristine Myhre, finished the 2000-meter race in a time of 8:23.1. SMC finished 40 seconds of the pace of Gonzaga, which finished first. San Diego finished second, 19 seconds ahead of the Gaels, Santa Clara was third (8:10.5) and Loyola Marymount (8:15.3) was fourth. In the junior varsity eight competition, Saint Mary's finished the race in a time of 7:22.4 for a fourth place finish. The Gaels, who got four points with its fourth place finish, was just .6 seconds behind third place LMU, and six seconds behind second place Santa Clara. The Bulldogs earned 10 points with its second medalist finish of the championship, as the boat crossed the line in a time of 7:56.6. The junior varsity eight boat had coxswain Amber Oosman, Kyla Tom, Jennifer Morrison, Sunsie Haro, Alexxia Kilby, Kate Marrocco, Amy Romero, Linzey Simonson, and Ariele Elia.
The varsity eight came through big time for the Gaels as they finished second in the varsity eight race, pulling in 12 points of the 17 earned by SMC. The varsity eight, which consisted of WCC coxswain of the Year Kate Shalvoy, crossed the line in a time of 6:56.0, which was 13 seconds of the pace of Gonzaga. SMC's boat, which was rowed by Lindsey Anderson, Michelle Grima, Johanna Timmer, Lexi Billo, Jennifer Tyndall, Sierra Timmer, Sandra Pichelli, and Ally Oldfield, finished three seconds ahead of LMU, 8.4 seconds faster than Santa Clara, and 13.9 seconds better than San Diego. The Saint Mary's women's rowing team will return to action on Saturday and Sunday in the 2007 WIRA Championship Regatta. The women's rowing team will compete in the varsity eight open division, the varsity four, the second varsity eight, women's pair and the novice eight.
