Women's Rowing Wins Varsity Eight Event at Santa Clara Invitational

Los Gatos, CA - On Saturday, the Saint Mary's women's rowing team competed in the Santa Clara Invitational at Lexington Reservoir. The Gaels competed in five races, which included both the varsity and novice teams. In the big race of the day, the Saint Mary's varsity eights posted a first place finish, defeating Santa Clara by six second, Sonoma State by 30 seconds and the California Lightweights by 35 seconds. The boat of coxswain Kate Shalvoy, stroke Lindsey Anderson, Michelle Grima, Johanna Timmer, Sierra Timmer, Jennifer Tyndall, Lexi Billo, Sandra Pichelli, and Ally Oldfield completed the race in a time of 6:38.40. The second varsity eight finished third in their race, pulling a time of 7:17.54. The second varsity eights were defeated by UC Davis (6:39.57) and Santa Clara (7:03.75). SMC's second varsity eight was driven by Amber Oosman and rowed by Kyla Tom, Jennifer Morrison, Sunsie Haro, Alexxa Kilby, Amy Romero, Kristine Myhre, Linzey Simonson, and Ariele Elia.
Saint Mary's also took home first place in the varsity four event, completing in the race in a time of 7:24.86. The Gaels beat two Santa Clara boats, which finished third and fourth, and UC Davis, which finish second in a time of 7:37.51. SMC competed in two novice events, as the novice eight and novice four boats competed at the Santa Clara Invitational. The Saint Mary's novice eight finished third in its race with a time of 7:31.21. UC Davis won the novice eight race with a time of 6:58.63, Santa Clara was third at 7:21.17, and Sonoma State was fourth at 7:33.49. The novice four finished second out of four boats with a time of 8:42.81. Saint Mary's will return to the water at the WCC Championships on April 27 at Lake Natoma in Sacramento, CA.
