Gonzaga remained in the race with a 68-4 win over Saint Mary's, while Portland knocked off San Francisco 67-63. Pepperdine continued to surge, handing San Diego a 69-66 defeat at Jenny Craig Pavilion. lt;pgt; lt;bgt;LMU 8, Santa Clara 3lt;/bgt;lt;brgt; Loyola Marymount women's basketball beat its own record Thursday evening, winning its ninth consecutive game by defeating Santa Clara 8-3 at the Leavey Center. The streak is a program-best for both conference and overall wins, passing the previous record of eight set earlier this season. lt;pgt; With her appearance in tonight's game, senior Kate Murray became the most-played Lion, setting the school record for games played at 11. Murray passed current LMU Assistant Coach Lynn Flanagan, who played in 114 games during 1988-1991 tenure with the Lions. lt;pgt; Santa Clara opened the game five-for-five from the field, but a -0 run by the Lions out of the first official timeout kept the Lions within two with 1 minutes remaining in the first. lt;pgt; LMU took its first lead of the game on a drive by Murray with just over nine minutes to play in the first. The Lions extended that lead to three at 19-16 when sophomore Jevay Grooms grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back up for two. lt;pgt; The Lions kept Santa Clara scoreless for over eight minutes in the middle of the first, while Murray, Bianca Ziemann, Grooms, and Jacquelyn Woods combined for 11 points. During the Bronco drought, Bianca Ziemann came up with a huge blocked shot right under Santa Clara's basket. lt;pgt; LMU forced 17 Bronco turnovers in the first, with Murray and Woods each picking up three steals. Jasmin Matthews had eight first half rebounds, while Murray chipped in 11 points for the 31-3 Lion lead at the half. lt;pgt; Going on a 16-4 run to open the second half, the Lions took a 0 point lead with 1 minutes left in the game. lt;pgt; Santa Clara made it a five point ball game with a minute remaining, but as the Lions held on to the ball to use the clock to their advantage, Murray was left open for a lay-up to keep the seven point lead. Murray, who hit four-of-four free throws in the final two minutes, became LMU's second all-time leading scorer, passing another Flanagan mark with 1440 career points. LMU closed the record-setting win 8-3, securing the Lions' second series sweep of the season. lt;pgt; Murray finished with , while Mathews grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds. Gonzaga's defense limited sharpshooter Triola Jackson to one point during the entire game. lt;pgt; Gonzaga came out strong with a 9-0 run to start the first half with four points coming from Anne Bailey. Saint Mary's was able to play catch-up bringing the score within two at 17-1 with 9:1 left on the clock. The Bulldogs took off with the lead, scoring 3 more points to the Gaels' six to end the half with a 19-point lead, 40-1. lt;pgt; Burke, Anderson and Katie Prichard all hit seven points for Gonzaga in the first half, while Savannah Williams led Saint Mary's with six. The Bulldogs controlled the boards as they doubled the Gaels' 10 rebounds with 0 in the first half alone. lt;pgt; Gonzaga owned the second half and needed to score only six points to claim victory over Saint Mary's. The Bulldogs ran the tally up to as much as 3 points over the Gaels. Saint Mary's made a 9-0 run at the end of the game, but Gonzaga took a 3 point victory over the Gaels. lt;pgt; The Bulldogs shot 41.4 percent (4-for-8) from the field and marked their 100th 3-pointer of the season. Saint Mary's shot 31.1 percent (19-for-61) and went 3-for-9 from the charity stripe. Gonzaga claimed the boards with 47 rebounds to the Gaels' 33. The Lady Dons (8-14, 1-8 WCC) played better than they have of late, but the Pilots (10-13, - WCC) executed down the stretch to complete the regular season series sweep for the second straight season. lt;pgt; Krueger led four USF players in double-figures with 14 points. Junior guard Toni Russell and sophomore guard Joy Hollingsworth each added 11. USF held a commanding 47-3 rebound lead, but committed 1 turnovers and forced just 13 Portland miscues. lt;pgt; USF shot at a .436 (4-) clip from the floor for the game, while the Pilots connected on .333 (0-60) from the floor.
