Pepperdine's Rico, San Diego's Ysern Advance At NCAA Singles Championship
May 24, 2006 Stanford, Calif. - Three WCC men's tennis players were in action in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship in Stanford, CA on Wednesday. San Diego's Pierrick Ysern, the 2005 NCAA Singles runner-up, advanced to the second round after defeating Texas A&M's Jerry Makowski with a 6-3, 6-3 straight set victory, while Pepperdine's Pedro Rico upset fourth-seeded Lars Poerschke of Baylor 6-4, 6-7(2), 7-5 to advance to the round of 32. Rico's teammate Scott Doerner fell in first round play to Notre Dame's Sheeva Parbhu, 7-5, 6-0. Makowski was ranked 12th nationally before falling to Ysern, who ranks 42nd in the nation. Ysern faces either No. 56 Adrian Prpic of Texas Tech or Alabama's Joseph Jung, who ranks 61st nationally, in Thursday's second round. Earlier in the year, Ysern defeated Prpic by scores of 6-3 and 6-2 in a 4-2 Torero victory. Pedro Rico, ranked No. 31 in the nation, will face Adrians Zguns of Arkansas on Thursday. Doerner will be in action in the NCAA Doubles Championship, as the WCC Player of the Year pairs up with sophomore Andre Begemann to form the No. 3-seed duo and will face Matthew Baccarani and Patrick Thompson of Ball State in first round play on Thursday.
