NCAA First & Second Rounds The No. 20 ranked Pepperdine men kick off their national title defense this weekend at USC, taking on No. 42 Penn State on Friday at 1:00 PM in Los Angeles. A win will put the Waves into the second-round to face the winner of the other first-round match between UC Santa Barbara and No. 12 USC. Pepperdine recorded six consecutive wins over Montana State, TCU, Florida, UCLA, Texas and Georgia to take home the 2006 NCAA team title. On the women's side, the No. 20 Waves travel to Fresno State to take on No. 44 Long Beach State in the first round on Saturday at 10:00 AM at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center in Fresno. The winner of the match will take on the winner of Army vs. No. 14 Fresno State in the second round. Last season, Pepperdine defeated Wichita State in the first round of the tournament before being knocked out by UCLA in the second round. Pepperdine had three individuals and one doubles team selected to compete in the 2007 Division I NCAA Tennis Championships. Junior Andre Begemann and freshman Bassam Beidas will compete on the men's side while junior Sylvia Kosakowski was selected as one of 64 individuals to take part in the women's tournament. Junior Bianca Dulgheru was chosen as an alternate for singles and will compete with Kosakowski as one of 32 doubles team. The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 23-28 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia, hosted by the University of Georgia, following the conclusion of the team championship. - Bryce Cooper and freshman Roman Dojcak were the Zags' top doubles duo this season, going 14-9 in dual matches and earning an all-conference honorable mention for doubles. - The Gonzaga women had two players earn All-WCC honorable mention recognition in Emily Anderson and Aglaya Kokurina. Anderson played the entire spring season at No. 1 singles for the Zags, while Kokurina moved up from the No. 5 spot to become the Bulldogs' No. 2 singles player. - The men closed out the season with a dual match record of 11-16, but were winless against WCC schools, while the women finished 4-18 in dual matches. - Mesterova was also named the April WCC singles Player of the Month thanks to her 5-1 record to close out the season, with her only loss coming to the No. 3 singles player in the country. For her efforts, Mesterova was named as a third alternate for the NCAA individual championships. - Robyn Baker and Mesterova paired to earn an All-WCC first team selection, while No. 2 doubles duo Serena Fermin and Tamara Tanner earned honorable mention recognition. - The LMU men finished the season with a win over Gonzaga to take seventh place at the WCC Championships. The Lions closed out the year with an 8-15 record in dual matches this season. - Andre Begemann, the WCC Player of the Year and No. 16 ranked singles player in the country, closed the regular season with a 19-7 record playing solely at No. 1 singles. - Freshman Bassam Beidas wrapped up his freshman campaign with an All-WCC first team selection and the April WCC singles Player of the Month award. Beidas went 8-0 in April and clinched the final point in the Waves' 4-0 sweep of San Diego in the WCC final. - The Pepperdine women had five singles players and all three doubles tandems receive all-conference recognition. Katia Sabate, Sylvia Kosakowski and Bianca Dulgheru all made the singles first team, while Caroline Raba was a second team pick. Dulgheru and Kosakowski made the doubles first team, while Anete Bandere and Eva Dickes were a second team pick. - Zivkovic and Jager's all-conference selection marks the third straight year that Portland has had a doubles team earn All-WCC recognition. - The Pilot men finished the season with a 13-8 record, going 1-2 in the WCC Tournament to finish sixth. - The Portland women topped Northwest rival Gonzaga to take home seventh place at the WCC Tournament. - Senior Andre Sion made his second appearance on the All-WCC first team this year after earning first team honors as a freshman in 2004. Sion clinched the winning point for the Gaels over Santa Clara at the WCC Tournament. - The women had five singles players named to the all-conference teams, including first team honoree Aude Lambert and second team selections Marah Calvo, Jessica Hoath and Femke Strijbis. - Doubles pairs Lambert and Hoath and Femke Strijbis and Nienke Strijbis earned All-WCC honors. - Both Michael Wayman and Lisa Alipaz earned WCC Coach of the Year honors for SMC. - No. 1 singles player Thomas Liversage earned All-WCC first team honors and took Pepperdine's Andre Begemann to within one point of a straight set loss in the WCC championship match. - Freshman Samantha Mouly took home San Diego's first Freshman of the Year award after compiling an 11-7 record at No. 2 and No. 3 singles for the Toreros. - USD earned five all-conference selections including singles second team members Chris Coetzee and Matt Ozurovich. Coetzee and Liversage also made the doubles second team. - The women finished the season with a 6-16 overall record. - Thong Tu joined Berry with a second team selection. Tu posted a 16-8 record playing at No. 2 and No. 3 singles this season. - Mylene Martin and Camille Pamart both earned singles honorable mention recognition for their efforts this season. The two also paired up for a doubles honorable mention after going 11-11 at No. 1 singles for the Dons. - Asaf Cohen earned all-conference honorable mention recognition. The freshman posted a 16-8 record playing mainly at No. 4 and No. 5 singles this year, and finished the season with a 7-3 record in his last 10 singles matches. - Jan Macek, Bobby Rasmussen and Jay Wong all recieved All-WCC second team recognition. The three combined to record 48 singles wins in dual matches for the Broncos this season. - Casey Knutson earned second team honors for the Bronco women after going 8-9 in singles this year. Knutson also teamed with Erika Barnes to take home second team doubles honors and the April WCC doubles Team of the Month award. - Macek and Rasmussen earned Santa Clara its second consecutive doubles all-conference selection.
