Apr 13-Pepperdine defeated San Diego by a final score of 4-1 on Sunday afternoon to capture the West Coast Conference (WCC) title at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu. The Waves, ranked No. 50 nationally, improved to 11-13 overall and earned the league's automatic berth to the 64-team NCAA Championships. San Diego, ranked No. 69, fell to 8-10.
Due to inclement weather, the six singles matches were played first, and the Waves won four of the five matches that were completed.
Pepperdine sophomore Anna Andersson clinched the win with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over San Diego's Lauren Leo at No. 6 singles.
Pepperdine jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead, as freshman Merve Asimgil and sophomores Veronica Koksova and Karin Schlapbach each posted straight sets wins.
San Diego earned its lone point at No. 3 singles as Tara Livesay won the final six games to record a come-from-behind 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Monika Horvath.
Rain forced the cancellation of the other three matches scheduled for Sunday.
Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara tied for third place, Portland and San Francisco tied for fifth while Saint Mary's and Gonzaga tied for seventh place.
Santa Clara senior Christine Limbers was selected the WCC "Player of the Year" in a vote conducted by the league's coaches.
Limbers was joined on the All-WCC singles first team by seniors Penka Fileva and Edit Pakay of Loyola Marymount, freshman Natalie Braverman and junior Charlotte Vernaz of Pepperdine and freshman Emma Murphy of San Diego.
The All-WCC doubles first team included Fileva and freshman Patrycia Hubl of Loyola Marymount, senior Monika Horvath and Vernaz of Pepperdine plus sophomore Janalle Kaloi and Limbers of Santa Clara.
Braverman was tabbed the WCC "Freshman of the Year," while Hilary Somers of San Francisco was honored as the "Coach of the Year."
