Over the weekend, the Pepperdine and LMU men's tennis teams came out with victories

 
 
 

 

 
 
Pepperdine 5, Fresno State 2
The Pepperdine men's tennis team closed out the regular season home schedule in style Saturday afternoon after defeating No. 39 Fresno State 5-2 at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center on Senior Day 2004. The Waves honored seniors Calle Hansen and Alexandre Herrera in pre-match ceremonies before taking the momentum at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles where they grabbed the 1-0 lead heading into singles action.

Pepperdine improved to 15-7 overall with the win while the Bulldogs dropped to 11-8. The Waves have defeated Fresno State 12 out of 14 times.

At No. 1, the 70th-ranked Greg Shearer was taken out by No. 22 Pedro Rico 6-3, 6-4. Stefan Suta of Fresno State recorded an upset victory over No. 45 Hansen at No. 2 singles 7-6 (3), 7-5 for one of two singles wins for the Bulldogs. Herrera took care of Alex Krohn 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 3 singles and Scott Doerner upended the Bulldog's Charles Irie 6-4, 6-4. Alexis Rafidison's victory over Sergiu Modo (6-3, 6-2) gave Pepperdine the final singles point at the No. 6 spot.

In singles, Suta and Jakub Cech at No. 5 were the lone Bulldogs to post wins. Cech defeated Johnson 4-6, 6-4, (10-8).

Loyola Marymount 4, Claremont 3
Loyola Marymount men's tennis, now winners of seven of its last nine matches, defeated Claremont 4-3 on Saturday. The Lions moved their record to 10-7 as they continue to gain momentum for the WCC Championships to be held at Santa Clara April 22-25.

LMU's freshman doubles duo of Nico Terrien and Ashton Politanoff gave the Lions their first victory of the afternoon at the No. 3 doubles spot, defeating Claremont's Aaron Fuhriman and David Oehm 8-5, to improve their doubles record to 12-2 as a team. But LMU could not hold onto the other two matches, as Claremont took the doubles point.

But sophomore Michael Wojnarowicz quickly shifted the momentum of the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Claremont's David Oehm at the No. 3 spot. "

The Lions secured victories at the No. 1, 4, and 5 singles spots as well to claim the 4-3 victory. Terrien defeated No. 32 (DIII) John Michael Cham-A-Koon 7-6(2), 6-3 at the No. 1 spot, junior Beau Berglund took care of Eric Chow 7-5, 7-6 (7) at the No. 4 spot, and freshman Matt Phillips defeated Kyle Ellison in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5.

Saturday's win was a good one for the young LMU squad, as Claremont is a contender for the No. 1 spot in the nation (DIII) when the next rankings are released, recently defeating three of the top four teams in the country in their division.

Whitman 5, Gonzaga 2
Despite two singles wins, the Gonzaga University men's tennis team lost its 14th-straight match of the season to Whitman College, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs dropped to 4-17 with the defeat.

Doubles play was controlled by Whitman with victories in all three matches. Bryce Cooper and Dru Ernst gave Gonzaga a chance as they pushed David Miller and Robbie Munday with a 9-7 effort. Whitman won the other two matches, both 8-4, for the doubles point.

Cooper made his first appearance in over a week after battling an illness to put the Bulldogs on the board with his 6-1, 6-2 victory over Steven Ly in the No. 1 spot. Brett Womack followed in suit for Gonzaga's second point with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Phalkun Mam. However, the Bulldogs were defeated in the remaining four matches with only Jesse Goldsmith taking his match to three sets. Goldsmith was defeated in the No. 6 spot by Dane Miller after a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 effort.

Boise State 6, San Francisco 1
The Boise State men's tennis team defeated the University of San Francisco Saturday morning by a score of 6-1 at the Appleton Outdoor Tennis Center.

In the match, Boise State won the doubles point after Axel Elvik and Mason Fuller won at number one for the Dons, BSU's Mahmoud Rezk and Matias Silva won at two and Nils Klemann and Beck Roghaar won at number three.

The Broncos then one from the one through the five singles spots with Thomas Schoeck at one, Mhmoud Rezk at two, Matias Silva at three, Nils Klemann at four, and James Ludlow at five. Rafael Corazzo of San Francisco defeated Ehren Vaughan at six for San Francisco's team point.
