WCC ATHLETES OF THE MONTH FOR MARCH SELECTED
MENS PLAYER OF THE MONTH - Pedro Rico, Pepperdine
Pepperdine sophomore Pedro Rico has been tabbed as the WCC Mens Tennis Player of the Month for March. Rico won six straight singles matches, while playing at the top two spots for the Waves during the month. He had a key upset win against then-No. 25 ranked Adriano Biasella from No. 4 ranked USC on March 19, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. The native of Alicante, Spain also led the Waves to wins by recording singles victories in matches against Arizona State, Michigan State, Cal Poly, Princeton, and Dartmouth. Pepperdine ascended to No. 27 in the nation after posting a 5-3 mark, and Rico earned a No. 25 singles ranking on March 28. Rico was also named as the WCC Player of Month for February.
WOMENS PLAYER OF THE MONTH - Emma Murphy, San Diego
San Diegos Emma Murphy has been tabbed as the WCC Womens Tennis Player of the Month after leading the Toreros to a 6-3 team record during March. The sophomore posted a record of 8-1 during the month and helped San Diego to a 5-2 upset of then-No. 26 ranked New Mexico. Murphy was 6-1 in the No. 2 singles slot, then finished out the month by going 2-0 in the No. 1 singles slot. The native of Cork, Ireland claimed a victory in each of her last seven singles matches, including wins over players from No. 8 ranked USC and No. 26 ranked New Mexico. Murphy improved to 13-1 in singles competition and earned a No. 61 ranking, while the Toreros became the highest ranked WCC team at No. 38.
MENS DOUBLES DUO OF THE MONTH - Calle Hansen and Pedro Rico, PEP
Pepperdine sophomore Pedro Rico and senior Calle Hansen produced a successful March, as the pair teamed up to post a 5-2 record. The tandem upset TCUs No. 10 ranked tandem on March 8, and also recorded wins against Arizona State, Michigan State, Princeton, and Dartmouth. The pair are currently ranked as the No. 18 doubles tandem in the nation.
WOMENS DOUBLES DUO OF THE MONTH - Caroline Raba and Charlotte Vernaz, PEP
The Pepperdine tandem of freshman Caroline Raba and senior Charlotte Vernaz paired up at the No. 1 doubles spot for the Waves and posted a 3-1 mark during the month of March. The team defeated tandems from No. 10 ranked California, No. 16 ranked Miami and Marquette. Their only loss came to the #29 ranked doubles team of Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cine of North Carolina.
