Mar 24-The Saint Mary's men's tennis team was defeated by Air Force 6-1 on Monday afternoon at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex. Martin Marechal improved his overall season record to 11-4 with his victory at the #4 singles position.With the loss the Gaels fall to 6-12 on the season while the Falcons improve to 15-2 overall.
In doubles play, the Gaels lost the overall team point, despite Andre Sion and J.J. Whitlinger being victorious at the #3 doubles position over the Falcon's tandem of Tyler West and Chris Dong by a final score of 8-3. Saint Mary's lost the team point in a extremely competitive match when the Gaels' pair of Thomas Burgemeister and Filip Sarovic were defeated by Justin Moncinelli and Shannon Buck, 9-8 (2).
In singles action, Saint Mary's lone victory came at the #4 singles position when Martin Marechal defeated Air Force's Justin Moncinelli in straight-sets 6-1, 6-2. 2002 All-WCC Honorable Mention honoree, Thomas Burgemeister lost a close match at #1 singles to the Falcons' Shannon Buck by a final score of 7-6 (5), 6-3. Freshman Andre Sion also played well despite losing to the Falcons' Martin Black in a marathon match 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
Saint Mary's will return to the courts on Saturday, March 29 as they travel to Stockton, CA to duel University of the Pacific with play beginning at 1:00 PM.
